Air traffic controller staffing shortages worsened over the weekend as the nation’s government shutdown hit its fourth week, leading to delays and anxiety, and experts say it won’t get better until air traffic controllers get paid.
More than 50 staffing shortages have been reported since Friday morning, causing delays from Los Angeles to Washington, DC, according to an operations update. Controllers are considered essential workers, so they must work during the shutdown, but are not being paid.
Flights for Los Angeles International Airport were temporarily halted Sunday because of a staffing shortage at the Southern California TRACON, which handles flights arriving or departing. At Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, staffing issues caused a ground delay Sunday that was expected to last until midnight.
Me and my family are about to go on a trip, and it starts with a flight tomorrow.
Wish us luck, cause I’m hoping nothing serious happens.
When the Roman empire fell, it didn’t happen overnight. It took years of slow decay for it to really become apparent. One of the biggest signs was when bridges fell and no one came to have them restored. Much of the US’ infrastructure is slowly rusting away before our eyes but the lack of ATC’s is a much faster indicator of how little the empire cares for its core.
Good, you can’t feed or pay your people then nobody deserves to travel. Stay the fuck home and strike.
They made it illegal for them to strike under Reagan. Their strikes were way too effective for the powers that be. So, now, they call in sick until it hurts.
Because we really seem to be following the law these days
call in sick until it hurts.
This is how a country wide worker strike needs to be planned and executed.
America is collectively some mental illiness that is definitely protected by fmla.
What does the world look like when we all call in with explosive diarrhea on Dec 10th?
And what will they do if they all strike? Arrest them all? They will still be without ATCs and planes will still be grounded. If the president Cheeto can break every law fuck it and just strike. They don’t have to call it a strike just don’t go in.
It’s a shame how contagious this bug is. It will likely get everyone before the shutdown ends. I wish them all the best in their health, they should take as long as they need to rest and recover.
In the U.S. that is. The rest of the world works as intended, thank you very much.
They’re counting people believing it’s the D’s fault, even as they keep blocking the most recent D elected to Congress from seating.
A recent poll says they’re losing on that front, but not by enough:
Among independents, 48 percent think Republicans in Congress are more responsible, while 32 percent think Democrats in Congress are more responsible and 14 percent volunteered that they think both parties are equally responsible.
Fuck all the non-military Feds and their families, eh? Nobody will fucking care until travel gets disrupted like last time?
Fuck this shithole and fuck every asshat who voted conservative. Drop fucking dead, assholes.
The bigger issue is our complete unwillingness as a country to fix issues. We have zero interest in reforming old laws, combining them, deleting them, reducing the number of rules.
When you have a lot of rules, systems start behaving erratically as they represent overfit systems of equations. The solution is fewer, but better rules. (see the curve on the right, which has the most constraints, does the worst job at capturing the intended shape)

When instead of doing this, your incoming politicians only focus on what is easy to do, you wind up with breakage. For example if everyone had the same rules regarding whether they could strike, that would represent a simplification.
Fly VFR and make everything a class G.
Fucking stupid? Yes, but flying is not necessary.
End the shutdown:
