    i used to work in a produce department and I can confirm that this is because the produce in stores is usually months old before it hits the shelf and everything is kept cold to make sure it only rots once it’s been purchased. Except for the 2-5% of all stock we were expected to throw away on a daily basis because it had already spoiled, or didn’t look nice enough.
