I must say, even though I don’t play much online, the lack of a traditional 3 lap grand prix is annoying.
The roads between circuits are not so great a concept that they had to force it on every mode. Especially since a lot of them are very same-y, with only a couple rather cool areas. I was not a big fan of linear tracks that have appeared since 7, but 2 “laps” of random highway for only 1 lap on the actual circuit is worse.
For that reason and a couple others, I still think 8 is the better game.
Agreed. I’m pretty much completely over World at this point and only play if my kid asks me to. I think it’s technically impressive and gorgeous to look at, but the tracks are so utterly boring I have little motivation to fire it up.
I’m still salty about the lack of local multiplayer free roam too, but that’s another issue entirely.
I hadn’t even thought of local coop free roam, but yeah, that would be fun too.
What I had thought though was why the hell don’t we meet random online people messing around, in that mode that’s basically just about messing around? Anything to make it feel less empty and boring.
I mean come on, they did random online coop in the latest actual main Mario game!
I have only played one grand prix (and that too locally), so I can’t say if World or 8 is better, but DK Spaceport is probably one of the most interesting track I have played.
I have only played it once though, so am not sure if it was the nostalgia hit or if the track is actually good but its still pretty unique.
I agree this one is great. But there’s another problem with World : it’s one of the 3 tracks or so that are actually new. Almost everything else is an old track they remastered a bit. It’s not badly done, but it feels stale.
Base game 8 already had a lot of fully new, very good tracks. And 8’s DLC had some of the best ever, including a few cool crossover circuits.
Even World’s music feels like they went exclusively for nostalgia. There is a lot of it, but every piece of music except this episode’s main theme is a remix of a previous Mario Kart or Mario game.
Oh, I have only played MK 8 before this, and haven’t played World much, so haven’t noticed anything yet, but that doesn’t sound great for long time players. Hope they add more tracks, but I am not sure how common DLC tracks in MK are.
Until then it wasn’t a thing, but 8 is a precedent for new DLC tracks. The original had a great DLC with 4 extra cups of new circuits. Those are included in the Switch version. There is also the later pass that is made of recycled Mario Kart Tour content, but except maybe a couple, those are rather forgettable and disappointing.
I am really not sure whether we can expect new tracks in World though. If they want them to work the same as the rest of the game, it would basically mean also designing a new landmass around them. It’s not impossible, but I assume it must be a lot of work.
3 lap racing local co-op mode to unlock tracks and bonus content was the bread and butter for me. So few games have a co-op campaign. I also enjoyed local battle modes as well. They never updated battle mode once in MK8.

Yes! They really under utilized free roam, especially when you look at how big a deal they made out of it in the reveal trailer.
