let me side load something real quick
Why has every company in the world turned pure evil?
Capitalism
Any Android I can’t either root or change the ROM I will never use. Period.
Ngl, I feel the same way. The news pissed me off so much.
I was looking forward to getting a folding phone, but now I’m not sure I want to buy anything Android anymore. The list of phones I was thinking off:
-Pinephone (but it’s slow, buggy, and laggy tho :/)
-Fairphones (easy bootloader unlock, compatible with Lineage, e/OS/, CalyxOS (Calyx temporarily paused development), expensive because it has to be imported… US tariffs :/)
-Moto G 5G 2024 (supposed to be unlockable, but apparantly requires internet and requesting unlock codes from Motorola, I’m not feeling too happy about that)So yea idk, leaning towards the Moto, its the cheaper options, and its better than pinephone. Haven’t gotten it yet, but planning for it, I’ll have to figure out how android SDK and terminals work first. And I’m not sure if it would actually unlock, I’ll have to see if Moto’s unlock servers want to play nice, if not, I’d have to return it and start looking for, idk, maybe those phones made by the company “Nothing”, but only Nothing 2 is supported by Custom ROMs and idk if I can even find a Nothing 2.
Edit: Formatting
FYI except for some phones like prepaid cheapies, Motorola always issues the unlock code. I’ve done it on a dozen different Motorola phones. It’s a fairly quick procedure.
Honestly it has surprised me given the giant plunge in quality that they took around the time of the first Razr until the early Droid units. They seriously dropped the ball and I had pretty much written them off. But nowadays their devices are absolutely beautiful. I’ve changed to custom ROM probably more Motorola units than any other, that’s not to say because of not liking them; I don’t like any stock rom. But Motorolas are just really nice phones. As a supplemental device to my primary phone I use also a Moto G Stylus 5G 2023. The XT2315-1. I’m actually about to ROM Iode onto there soon. But it’s a terrific phone. Just a little skinner than I’m comfortable with but I just put it in a bulky case and it’s fine.
Just thought I’d let you know, because you seemed to express apprehension at the idea.
What about grapheneos on pixel
But then you’re supporting google itself 👀
Also, they closed source pixel-specific code, making it much more difficult to do future securitu updates. If I’m gonna spend $500+, I rather spend it on a Fairphone.
Used market can mitigate the “google makes money from you” part, but there are so many carrier variants that are “unlocked” but not bootloader unlocked, and I don’t like playing lootboxes with real money, like okay I buy a phone, oh shit its a verizon and can’t unlock bootloader, and the seller refuses return, and platform sides with seller because its technically “unlocked” because the sim unlock is all the normies care about.

I hopped the hoop to unlock a motorola in 2023: voided the warranty for the code which didn’t work. Support gave no help or insight (while refusing to un-void the warranty) …it had an un-advertised time lock, so after waiting a week, & wiping everything again I was able to have admin to my own fscking device.
Well, I’m gonna try anyways, if the unlock doesn’t work for me, I’m gonna have to pray to Mr. Mangione again, wish me luck? 👀
The moment my phone disables sideloading is the moment I go back to using a flip phone and a laptop.
If that happens (and it’s a big if, they’re not taking adb away any time soon) I’ll just use the fancy new Linux environment that Pixels have and script a way to open up YouTube from within that. Since it’s my own Linux environment I can have adblock installed. No worries.
Brew OS superiority
I will move to custom roms. There is no way I will don’t use revanced.
Custom ROMs will no longer exist. Google is no longer sharing drivers for Pixel hardware on AOSP and they only release it public very late now. Samsung phones blow a fuse if you unlock them. Not many android brands left. Reverse-engineering and swiping of drivers will work for a time on older models, but it will become increasingly impossible.
Custom ROMs need the boot loader to be unlocked. These are getting harder and harder to find at reasonable price points.
TBH you should be moving to custom ROMs now and not later (Lemmy moment)
I need to wait. Custom roms development for my new phone has only just started. Right now, there are only beta releases of LineageOS (unofficial). It doesn’t look that bad even though it has a MediaTek SoC.
Moto G 5G 2024 is supported by Lineage OS anf CalyxOS (Calyx temporarily paused development for now), it’s around $200 USD ($140 on discount right now) is supposedly unlockable, although you need an internet connection and request unlock codes from Motorola, which is… not exactly comforting because they could turn off the unlock servers at any time. (And carrier variants aren’t unlockable afaik). Disclaimer: Haven’t tried it yet… probably getting one soon to try unlocking (if unlocking fails, I’m just gonna return it)
Moving to Calyx once they restart development.
Either that or Linux, PostmarketOS seems most interesting to me. Not perfectly daily drivable yet it seems, but that’s what Android is destined to become for me as well, just likely even worse.
Honestly, I kind of even just like the idea of saying “I don’t have a supported smartphone” when someone pushes me to download some stupid app, but would you look at that, it’s not some ancient device.
Although it seems there’s no way to access SIM Toolkit on Linux, which I kinda need.
There aren’t many good options for Linux phone… https://linmob.net/resources/#smartphones
I’ll probably use my laptop for most things, then a phone with Linux, then a Lineage second phone for BS that doesn’t run on Linux.
Google disable sideloading apk.
Meanwhile after some ADB and Shizuku later be like : there’s no god other than meSure, then two months later pm install gets the same restrictions.
laughs in root
If root is the only way then most affected apps will halt development due to missing users.
