'It looks to me, based on these data, that Canadians feel that their relationship with the United States has changed in a fundamental way,' said an Ipsos leader.
Ah, Threads and some other lower quality social media are full of people making snarky comments to users from the States, saying something to the effect of “we are also in the Americas, so we’re Americans, you’re a US-ian”.
It all basically stems from the fact that in Spanish, the demonym for people from the US is “estadounidense” (United-Statesian) whereas “America” is used to refer to all of North and South America as a regions. People are too dumb to realise “America” has a different connotation in the two languages and it devolves into flame wars.
This is almost 100% a latin american thing. They’re taught that the americas are a single continent. For some reason they’re really stuck on this point as if it’s some kind of gotcha (it isn’t). Everyone (including them) are aware of what nation is being discussed when we say america/americans. They should just get over it.
Ah gotcha. Not sure why that would devolve into flame wars. I would want to distance myself as far as possible from anything related to the US as possible if I had a choice.
The first. I don’t even know what the second thing is. 🤷
