- it’s great for natives to get ownership over the natural resources being exploited from their land
- its great to see coal leases going for essentially nothing - dead dinosaur corps can’t stop renewable!
- this company seems to have a renewable energy portfolio
But this company does operate mines. I don’t see anything about their intentions for this lease so we have to assume that is the price where they could profitably exploit those resources
I heard this story on NPR on the radio this morning.
Basically, renewables are the top dog with energy right now, and no one cared to bid on this coal deal. The people that won were the only bidders.
And yet because of the coal lobby, republicans are trying to Weekend at Bernie’s an entire industry.
They’ll die before it destroys the climate, and every year they don’t tank it out, it loses value.
It’s why we need hard stops instead of letting it drag on.
The corps will do irreparable damage to landscapes for a couple extra million in private income for a few people.
It’s not worth it, but we know they’ll take the $ if they can, so we can’t give them the choice
The people that won were the only bidders.
And they may not even get it.
Federal officials did not immediately say if they would accept the offer. It was the only bid received.
The Fed could end up saying that the bid was too low and may not accept it despite there being no other offers. This is far, far less than they were hoping for, I’m sure. Per the article, the last successful lease in the area was “$793 million, or $1.10 per ton, for 721 million tons of coal in Wyoming.” This bid is $186,000 to lease 167 million tons which comes to something like like $0.001 per ton. The last coal lease was worth 1000 times more than this bid.
Just capitalism showing competition works.
Just bring back those big beautiful Steam Locomotives from the old black and white westerns. It is something we’re considering, the concept of ‘locomotive.’ Nice two-inch side, solid steel. Not aluminum, aluminum that melts if it looks at a car sitting on the track. Starts melting as the car’s about two miles away.
I am a very aesthetic person. I don’t like some of the trains they’re doing aesthetically. They say, ‘Oh, it’s fast.’ That’s not fast. An ugly train is not necessary in order to say you’re fast.

I can hear the Navajo laughing now.
