Synology has backtracked on one of its most unpopular decisions in years. After seeing NAS sales plummet in 2025, the company has decided to lift restrictions that forced users to buy its own Synology hard drives.

Still best not to buy anything from Synology. To my knowledge, Synology never demoted or fired the individuals responsible for this, that means they are still working at the company and looking to scam consumers.

Every C-suite approved it. Might as well shut down the whole company.

They would never have fired the exec that shat that idea out. They’d fire some poor r&d sap that hasn’t been putting in as much time as the others as a scapegoat.

Too little too fuckin late. Why would I recommend anyone go back to Synology? They’ll just reverse course again later.

    Lol

If they were surprised by the drop in sales then they do not know their target audience very well.

That only appears to apply to hard drives though.

If you want to use M.2 SSDs for your storage pool and cache, then you still need to use a Synology-certified SSD (which doesn’t necessarily mean that it needs to be Synology branded, just tested and certified).

Yea I bought my synology like a month before this announcement. Really puts a bad taste on everything they do since then. I won’t need to upgrade for a while but when I do it will not be a Synology device.
