I’ve been seeing a lot of people trying to find the perfect Linux distro to replace Windows 10 with, now that its support is ending, and Ubuntu is usually the first name that comes up. It makes sense since it is stable, beginner-friendly, and has a huge community that makes getting started with Linux easier.
But as someone whose first Linux distro was Ubuntu, and who has used it for over half a decade across different PCs, I’ve realized it might not be the smartest choice anymore. Instead, Fedora Silverblue turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. Even if you are new to Linux, it might actually be the better option.

I love Fedora atomic, really do, but it youre a power user and need docker regularly, you cant go around doing some Atomic bullshit, which in turn breaks stuff (for me it was sddm)
But for stuff like a media center, its godly
I’ve tried a few different distros that always seemed to have one issue or another, and they were all based on Debian. So I just tried Debian instead and it’s good, I’m not sure what the other distros are adding.
same, there is only one reason to get Ubuntu over Debian, if you have a Nvidia gpu, they make it easy to just work.
But, if you don’t need cuda, I recommend an AMD gpu and stick with Debian or Fedora. It is trouble free.
PS: I will try immutable distros some day, pinky promise ^^
Debian closed that gap in Bookworm, where nonfree firmware was included in the install medium by default.
I’m pretty sure the laptop I installed Debian on has an Nvidia GPU and it was pretty easy to install the drivers, and I’m very much at the tinkering level than an expert.
Even then, if you’re switching, just give installing drivers for Nvidia on Debian a go. If it doesn’t work, just move onto the next distro
I’ve never tried silver blue, but I can confirm that fedora in general has a very good balance of “Just works” and “Tinkerability”
E: I’m a little worried about red hat with their history, but if something happens I’m totally prepared to jump ship to an ArchOS, probably endeavor or manjaro
I’m more concerned with the current ownership.
Truly a shame, there are a few really talented and knowledgeable folks I knew at RH are no longer there. Even recently there was an RTO push(to drive people away) about a month ago, and then a round of layoffs just a few days ago.
IBM has an unfortunate history with acquisitions, and I fear RH will be just another footnote in a series of IBM mergers and acquisitions.

If you go Arch-based, just go Arch at that point. It’s beautiful.
It’s great if you know how to configure important system elements such as security and quick and easy system restoration in case of failure. If you don’t know how or don’t want to configure the system, it’s better to use distributions such as Manjaro if you want to use an Arch derivative, as it’s a distribution that has control over its repositories. I don’t recommend using a distribution that doesn’t have control over its repositories.
Funny you should mention Manjaro out of all distros, because I hear a lot of people recommend against using Manjaro for various reasons.

Strong insinuation here. What do you specifically mean has happened when you are insinuating that Arch doesn’t have control over its repositories?
Arch has control over its own repositories, but CachyOS, EndeavourOS, etc. do not.
Sooo again, just go with Arch. 👍 It ain’t that hard, and very worth it. An install of Arch can survive for decades.
fedora’s declaration that they’re officially okay with including “ai” generated code in the project has me shopping around for a new distro. CachyOS seems like it’s really soliid choice these days.
Oh come on, they added guidelines on how AI generated content has to be marked.
The alternative would be people committing their AI generated code anyway and just not telling anyone.
Its been downhill since compilers. People just script these days. No knolage of low level systems. Bring back assembly.

“AI code” is being added to the Linux kernel for years now.

I am willing to bet more than 80 % of programmers nowadays have AI assistance. It works. It saves time. Code is still public, reviewable.
You can either accept the new reality or hide in the woods.
