Back in the 80’s and 90’s I was a bit annoyed that so many SciFi movies were dystopian nightmares. The general trend historically has always been to move society forward, with only temporary setbacks.
Now I can see I was naive and over optimistic back then, and the dystopian nightmares were actually relevant warnings, ironically the warnings from Hollywood (USA) are mostly relevant thanks to USA.

(TL;DR: a not-necessarily-correct view of history as progression from a bad past to a good present, and probably a better future)
Ah got it. I though it was an American invention but looks like it was actually British.
Yep, still resonates with my opinion that only empires close to its peak can impose that kind of world view. Imagine being a colony of such an empire in the last century, or a neo-colony subject to economic pressure and CIA de-estabilization of your government in the 20th and 21st centuries, and it’s easy to think those are self serving ideas imposed on everyone.
If you prefer this particular dystopian vision with chuckles, Rifftrax did it and was pretty good as I recall.
I never understood the appeal of Rifftrax. Either they get in the way of enjoying a good movie or annoy the shit out of me while pretend watching a bad one. Clearly a lot of people like it, though, so more power to them.
