It’s been a long time since I used Kodi. Sheeit, I’m talking like nine years or so, like shortly after they stopped using the “XBMC” name. What are people’s thoughts on the interface and library functionality these days?

I loved the control Kodi offered, but I couldn’t quite get a setup that I liked… I wanted to show previously viewed tv episodes on the home screen along with whatever episode was “up next” or “on deck” but I couldn’t quite figure it out. I can’t remember the plugin name or exactly how it worked, but I started using a plugin that connected to my Plex Server for this (I was trying to leave Plex due to fewer customizable options and general shittiness), but it didn’t always sync right so I abandoned the idea of Kodi completely and went back to using Plex full time.

Ugh. Yeah that was all right for a while, but then Plex started getting really shitty with all the bloatware, UI changes, the new focus on streaming, and dumb/unclear restrictions (JFC, should we be able to run the server without connecting to their auth service or not?) so I dropped it in favor of Jellyfin, which I’ve been using for the past three years. I dig Jellyfin, but development is slow and it’s not nearly as customizable as I remember Kodi being.

So uh, yeah. Any thoughts on the current Kodi client interface? Can you make it usable in a Netflix-y sorta way so it shows your viewing history and what’s next in order for tv episodes? That should be easy to set up with themes and/or plugins, right? Oh, and how are genres and recommendations handled? Can you edit genre metadata?
