Taking the time to read the article, this isn’t a tale of big Western megacorp unnecessarily laying off workers. It’s a tragedy of an incredibly small indie studio being taken out behind the shed. Way more worringly, it seems like publishers have decided that with the market being so volatile, it’s better for them to bank on already established IPs, and they’re refusing to fund other projects. That’s pretty dire news, both because original works are very important to the medium being respected as an art form, and because the only way the Western games industry is dragging themselves out of the hole they’ve dug is to stop blowing all their capital on single big games and to instead support a wider net of smaller, innovative titles.
