    the beep tag doesn’t stop anything from going out the door, it just startles, confuses, and shames people who legitimately purchased something but are triggering the alarm with sensors that weren’t properly deactivated by the cashier.

    but nothing about shopping in person is anything less than a humiliation ritual these days.

      Yup, it’s the “annoying and invasive, but easily cracked DRM” of the retail world. It annoys legitimate customers, while doing very little to actually deter theft. Most of those beep tags can be quickly and easily removed with a strong magnet.
