I don’t think you sufficiently respect the mess, the smell, the vermin, from a week of rotting exposed food waste. Not to mention the dog waste

For some time we had a bin lined with a bag in the garage large enough for two weeks of our waste. Within the house were small bins, about the size of a shoebox stood on its end, with no bags. When they fill, we tipped it into the garage bin. Two bags a month is pretty good in my mind.

Smell, vermin, rotting exposed food waste were all solved by the garage bin having a lid.

That did not work for me

Although i thought it was sufficient growing up, despite a larger family and more food waste

        • maybe i was a kid and didnt notice
        • maybe metal garbage cans with toght lids sealed better
        • naybe it was just a ventilated garage

At my house, the squirrels have gnawed holes in the garage bin’s lid. It’s good that it has the lid, but it can’t completely stop the alley critters.

Ours is steel, so that would probably help. Though if you have raccoons in your area, it might require a large safe to keep the bin secure.
