It’s just a UI burden on the user which doesn’t exist on apps where likes are visible like mastodon and twitter. Like yeah okay maybe the nuances of communication don’t matter to you. Programmer…
Public votes long term engender a high-trust culture when it comes to voting behaviour. The original purpose of downvoting on sites like Reddit were that they were designed to downvote spam, abuse, off-topic content etc. Not just a disagreement button. It’s the same principle behind public moderator logs and public user posting history.
It also gives community moderators the ability to observe hostile voting behaviour and ban people for spam downvoting.
EDIT. I misread: Oh, they are public. You can go onto lemvotes.org and community moderators can see voting behaviour on their communities.
Where is that tumblr screenshot where someone is like “if your thing relies on everyone spontaneously doing the thing it will never happen”? Anyways it’s something which I agree to only with the caveat that we are talking about societies with fucked up social relations where people are forced to be selfish or die. That video of the Chinese easily zipper merging cleanly demonstrates there is a way to get everyone to Do The Thing. meanwhile when I lived in the US every single fucking person sped up in a way that almost killed me because they couldn’t land a skillshot to save their life.
So we are on a westoid site let’s reveal the votes cmon worst thing that happens is people have another thing to talk about on here
The votes are visible if you go to lemvotes.org.
And on communities you specifically moderate.
Why the fuck would I moderate something dear god also see other comment
I’m just telling how it works now. I don’t control the fediverse.
Do you lust for power?
No
Well maybe you should then. Philosopher kings. Or queens or theys (DJs?). I actually addressed this in my OP with the point about it being a pointless UI burden e.g. extra clicks
Yeah again I already know about that I’m not using it because using social media tools is for fuxking brain perverts. I’m not doing that it takes too long
I just find it kinda creepy that people dig into others votng and comment history. So weird
That’s because you have impure thoughts and intentions.
To understand what you mean, could you rephrase or explain your ideas? I read your post and couldn’t understand what you meant.
Well I would but my new years resolution is to stop explaining things to people or machines. If you wait to start a resolution until that last drunken moment, you probably won’t even follow it
That’s alright. I understand that explaining takes time and energy. That time and energy is something I often choose to spend, but I also sometimes choose not to. I would ask you why you want to stop explaining things, but that would, ironically, require you to explain things. I’m not saying this ironically or sarcastically: I hope you can be understood easily!
I appreciate that you perceived I was only 40% joking and actually going to vanish into the ether having slaked my thirst for pedantry and woe because I am. 😶🌫️
On the one-hand, I’m with you. On the other, almost no-one actually checks the comment-history of those they interact with here. You’ll mostly get the set that can’t be bothered to notice nuance diving into vote history instead.
You want people insulting you or refusing to interact with you because you downvoted a post or three in a random community, no matter how many you up-voted from same? Be my guest, but make it happen it yourself.
Yeah see your account is very suspicious, no wonder you would jump in here. Lol
Huh? I do check the comment history. There are obsessive people on here who use alt accounts constantly. You guys always have the dumbest excuses on here. You’re making it so I have to go out of my way, which I never will, but the crazy ass stalkers you ignore on here still have it wth?
I mean shouldn’t the bizarre misinterpretations of social science that justified hiding them in the first place be overturned by Elon hiding them so no one can see his uh, tastes? Penny dropped
Most admins & mods want them hidden because when they’re readily accessible to users, more catfights & vendettas spring up, which makes more unpleasant work for the mods & admins.
I think one or more user polls have been done in the past where the popular opinion was to keep them hidden. Does anyone remember, or better yet have a link?
There are tools to view the voting data if you so desire. Lemvotes allows everyone to see voting data, and moderators and admins are able to see the data from within Lemmy.
Additionally, downvoting can be completely disabled at the instance level by admins. If you find them to be a distraction or an annoyance you might want to try one that has them disabled.
Nah I want the inline thing where you can see stacked profile pictures. It’s 2025. It being a tool makes it part of the thought process of snooping on people. Telegram gets this, everyone rags on them for either being Putler or being CIA, but nobody will steal their OP ass abilities
In PieFed you can react to a post/comment with an emoji, which is shown with your name.
Nah I want the inline thing where you can see stacked profile pictures.
Cool.
Have you approached the devs about it through GitHub or anything? If there is support from others maybe it’s something they’d consider adding. If not you should start there since you’re basically left doing it yourself or living with it otherwise.
Since the software is open source people are free to develop and change it how they see fit. If it doesn’t work how you want it to, change it.
Yep you want it, you make it.
