I’m curious as to what Fediverse folks prefer. Discord is kind of everywhere.

I use both. All these matrix shills won’t admit that the public matrix chats are dead af and public discord communities are way more accurate. I’ve even tried Revolt and those chats, while more active than matrix, aren’t as active as discord.

whatever you say about discord, all i can hear is “you don’t own the data, you don’t control the servers, and the terms of service are subject to the whims of a for-profit corporation”

no feature set, and no “community” built on such a platform can convince me it’s worth my time to use it for anything more than bare utility. for instance, sometimes my pokemon tournaments require i join a discord. i install the app for the course of the tournament.

I guess it depends on how feasible it is to create a crawler and search engine. If you had bots crawl discord servers, continuously index everything, and then create a search engine for it, you’d probably be breaking their TOS and they’d C&D you. But I don’t think there’d be anything preventing someone from doing that on matrix. Matrix is just as decentralized as the web.

I don’t think that breaks their tos as long as the server owner consents, official bot API allows you to go through chat history

Yeah probably, though any good search engine starts by presuming consent until the owner explicitly says otherwise (robots.txt), and discord would probably take issue with that.

I mean in this case consent is enforced by the fact they’d need permissions to add the bot (if it was done properly and not via a self bot which would break tos)

Ah right, users and bots are treated differently. So yeah, in order to crawl disc servers without first asking every single one permission, you’d have to break the ToS. I have no idea if matrix has a separate “bot” type account.

Really, I think the matrix protocol needs some kind of support for this. I mean, both discord and matrix do, but I don’t think discord would ever do it.

Every single one meaning every server owner and not every user in the server I’m guessing?

Could definitely market a bot that generates a wiki from discord (maybe manages ticket, has git integration etc) to people who run these things though it’s not like the server owners are deliberately locking away their documentation and much of them have ticketing bots already

I will add “a fucking chatroom where they ban you for political reasons and there’s at least 3 accounts testing the water for how much nazism they can get away with and if you report them to the mods/admins they say they don’t see it and then ban you for wasting their time.”

A Hindutva fascist gave me death threats on Discord. I reported it to admins and they claimed they saw nothing. I understood most of Discord that tolerates rightwingers are shithole places, and it is best to stick to my own friend circles and more professional and/or leftist places.

I’m in a Discord server. I’d love for some folks in there to try out Matrix but I’m too scared to ask. Even if I wasn’t there’s still the issue of Matrix being too techie.

Everyone I know uses discord, and any attempt to try matrix with friends has more friction than discord. We often make use of streaming gameplay to each other, and I don’t know if that functionality works in matrix because we never get that far.

I have an account for both but I don’t really use them. The only thing I’ve done on Matrix was upload a profile picture and the only thing I use Discord for currently, is just to keep up with the updates for AI Dungeon because for some reason they’ve decided that the patch notes shouldn’t be accessible in the actual game/website anymore and have moved them to a completely different platform.

I’d probably use them more but I haven’t found a Matrix chatroom that I would actually consider using and most of the Discord servers I’ve actually considered interacting with act like cliques.

I use both, and telegram. And IRC. Open source stuff really is spread across an awful lot of chat platforms right now.

I have a Matrix client installed for some communication with some users from my instance but I don’t really use it. I don’t use discord either.

Pretty much just WhatsApp and Telegram, and Slack for work.

I use discord to talk with friends who use discord. I tried to use matrix but it seemed like a hassle and there’s no chance in hell that anyone I know uses it.
