Did the patient ever die on House? I’ve only seen random episodes from back in ye olden days of watching whatever was on TV, and in all the episodes I watched he saved the patient in the end. Compared to the actual U.S. healthcare system that rarely cares what’s wrong with you and will often do nothing until it’s too late, I think I’d take my chances with House.

This is actually the exact, singular purpose IQ is good for, and what it was initially created to do. It’s definitely overused in society, but when you’re trying to test a student to see how well their existing classwork has prepared them, it’s a fine measure to use.

I’ve been trying to go through and see if there are any other allusions that would make it a political statement, but can’t really find anything. Maybe that ants were chosen as the enemies who inhabited the island? but the “moral” of that arc was “hell yeah kill everything, even the kids” so I really hope that wasn’t meant as an allusion. It’s not like the manga makes any political statements in general, it’s your typical generic shonen “helping people is good” and “get strong” kinda themes. I guess there’s a bit talking about people trying to forget Jeju Island, but it’s played entirely in-universe. Seems too strange to be coincidence though.

hol up, Jeju island is a real place and a real massacre took place there? Doesn’t that make it kinda fucked up that the manga Solo Leveling used it as a location and set a different, wholly unrelated massacre there? I just naively assumed they made up an island. There wasn’t even a mention of the labor struggle in either the manga or the anime.

You’ll never actually get studies “proving” this in a scientific sense, unfortunately, because there’s really no way to design an ethical experiment. You can’t force one group to take homeopathic treatments vs another group receiving medical care, just as you can’t force one group to take vaccines while another doesn’t.

That being said, there are longitudinal studies demonstrating the rates of autism amongst vaccinated individuals and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone had done a similar study regarding medical outcomes for people who take homeopathic treatments. It’s just that scientists will never call that “proof” because the bar is very high, and media will always conflate that with “the jury is still out who knows what’s right” because they’re profit hungry bastards.

That’s a fair difference, but do you think the controversy wouldn’t exist if there was the same degree of separation? I’m pretty sure people would take umbrage with the comedians at the festival as long as it was hosted in Saudia Arabia, irregardless of who ultimately pays for it.

I can’t help but feel like a lot of the controversy is fueled by Islamaphobia. Like, would anyone be caring if these comics were going to a Budapest comedy festival? Hell, the United States is currently killing citizens, but I’ve not seen any pushback regarding any American comedy festivals. It just seems strange that the autocratic nation critics seem to have the most issues with happens to be Middle-Eastern.

Personally, I’m in the same boat as you. Saudia Arabia has already stepped in to help prop up too much of the media my parents help produce, and it’d be hypocritical of me to claim that this festival is a bridge too far.

I really, truly, seriously hate modern implementations of AI and am willing to make concessions in my life to avoid using it. Windows 11 forcing Copilot was my last straw for using Microsoft.

There is nothing in the fascist playbook that requires the other side to resist with violence. They can fabricate all the pretext they need to inflict violence on people themselves, and they already have been in the U.S. Historically, violent resistance is how countries remove their fascists.
