At the end of the movie it is revealed that West, disguised as a Klingon, had attempted to assassinate the Federation president. If you have no memory of this, then no worry. You’ve only seen the theatrical version. All the scenes which René appears we’re not included.

According to Memory Alpha, prior to 2009, the home media releases included the West scenes but did not list Colonel West or René Auberjonois in the credits. 2009 is when the first DVD release came out, being the theatrical cut. The page for West indicates the 4K remaster, released in 2022, includes West scenes but omitting the reveal of the assassin’s identity.
