So for those unaware, René Auberjonois filmed scenes as a Starfleet officer named West (who had an odd rank of Colonel). At the end of the movie it is revealed that West, disguised as a Klingon, had attempted to assassinate the Federation president. If you have no memory of this, then no worry. You’ve only seen the theatrical version. All the scenes which René appears we’re not included.
According to Memory Alpha, prior to 2009, the home media releases included the West scenes but did not list Colonel West or René Auberjonois in the credits. 2009 is when the first DVD release came out, being the theatrical cut. The page for West indicates the 4K remaster, released in 2022, includes West scenes but omitting the reveal of the assassin’s identity.
Which multiple edits of The Undiscovered Country existing, what is considered the canonical version?
Who thought it is a good idea to let George Lucas edit Trek? It’s like an Odo shot first kind of situation. And I think Odo never used a phaser.
Is this is the guy that Scotty shoots in the end? If so, I’ve only ever seen the version with that scene and the bad Mission: Impossible face mask reveal. And I owned this movie as a VHS bought in Europe as part of a set released before VII came out…
BASHIR: Out of all the episodes of star trek, which ones were canon and which ones weren’t?
GARAK: My dear Doctor, they’re all canon.
BASHIR: Even the non-cannonical ones?
GARAK: Especially the non-cannonical ones.
Now I have to watch Star Trek 6 to get some context…
Is it any good? I only ever saw Wrath of Khan and 4 because I didn’t grow up back in those days, and most older people (like my own dad) said most of the original movies kinda suck. 🤣
Of the TOS movies, the even ones are great, the odd ones are much weaker.
Star Trek VI captured a very specific moment in time in the real world. It’s a direct allegory for the end of the cold war, with all the mistrust and hope that came along with that. People usually rank it below IV and II but there’s a big gap between the top 3 and the rest.
II, IV, and VI are all worth a watch. They are a good movie, an entertaining movie, and a surprisingly good movie respectively.
I’ll watch the odd numbered ones as well but I’m a fan and I know I is too long, III is mostly not good, and I enjoy V for its craziness.
Star Trek VI is generally considered one of the “good ones”.
Of course, the secret is, they’re all the good ones.
Yes, even that one.
I would probably go with “whatever was the most recent release,” so West is canonical, but his identity as the would-be assassin is not?
Which I prefer, to be honest - having the Klingon be a Klingon helps to reinforce this as a cross-faction conspiracy.
@hopesdead The original theatrical release is canonical.
