Also Thursday, Nissan reported a 221.9 billion yen ($1.4 billion) loss for the fiscal first half. It recorded a 19.2 billion yen profit during the same period a year ago.

What the fuck happened to their sales ? Did China kill it ?

They have completely failed to keep up with their competitors. They were slow to adopt new technology, when they did it was unreliable. When you’re shopping for a car, if you compare a Nissan rogue to a Honda CRV, the Honda just seems a little nicer. The technology works better, and it’s the same goddamn price.

Lolol the lengths a CEO will go to protect their ego. (Rather than be a subsidiary to Honda because he wants to be an equal partner.)

To be fair, Honda isn’t exactly a great company today either, it’s been a good 20 years since they made a decent car.

Honda E is the closet thing they’ve got to something decent, but overbuilt to the max and therefore 3x more expensive than it should be.

Now I’m no Honda fangirl. The 1.5L is their least reliable engine in a while and they don’t offer a manual Civic below the Si, which is very underpowered and underspecced for its price. They also have removed Civic features to put them in the Integra instead of just making the Integra better. I also think the Integra is overpriced and Acura doesn’t make much else that appeals to me. The new Accord is a borefest and they killed the Accord manual by saying there’s no consumer demand when they decide how many get produced and they sold every one that was produced. The Honda E I agree should’ve been way cheaper and simpler.

After all of that still, to say Honda hasn’t made a good car in 20 years is completely bizarre and incorrect. I would so much rather be in a Civic or CR-V today than a Corolla or RAV4. Personally, I avoided both and got a VW GLI but that’s besides the point.

The civic type R is widely regarded as one of the best cars you can get today.

The funds will be used to modernize internal systems at its headquarters and accelerate digital modernization and the rollout of AI-driven systems

If a signigicant portion of those funds are going to AI, they are doomed.

Sure, lean into AI. Don’t worry about the really shitty transmission you’re still sticking in most of your cars, AI will fix it

According to the article, they’re selling it for ¥97 billion but will lease it back, so they will post a ¥73.9 billion gain from the sale. But in the first half of 2025, they posted a loss of ¥221.9 billion. So selling their HQ will offset about two months’ worth of losses.

    Oof.

I’m driving a 26 year old Nissan and it still runs great.

Please don’t become another shitty car company. I thought I had an easy choice to make when I needed a new vehicle.

Sadly, it’s age is the reason you love that Nissan. Their cars have been steadily getting worse the last decade or two

Their ex-ceo who was responsible for all the cost cutting packed himself in a suitcase to escape the country, so maybe it didn’t work out after all

I dunno, I had a 2007 Nismo 350Z, #94, and that cr was sweet af. It may not have been representative of the brand as a whole.

That’s true for the 350’s, I’ll agree. Their v6 engines were pretty rock solid and those were designed and built by Nissan in Japan, along with the transmissions, and they weren’t CVT’s. A lot of their econo vehicles had Renault junk in them and their 4 cylinder engines didn’t hold up as well. Fun cars to drive, but not as fun or nimble as the s2000 I used to own and now dearly miss.

Same. I drive a 22-year old 350Z Roadster manual and I plan on keeping it forever. I beat on it cause it’s a sports car, yet it’s never needed anything more beyond basic maintenance. They just don’t make them this simple and reliable anymore.

Depending on the vehicle, it’s been a lot longer than that.

Nissan hasn’t made a decent sedan/saloon for the western market in 33 years. Bluebird U12 was the last good model. U13 used the awful, terrible, no good KA24 motor, where Japan got an SR20DE(T)

On the topic of car manufacturers, are there any new non-chinese (i.e. state funded) car-brands or is the market so consolidated and regulated that entry is pretty much impossible?

Hyundai, VW, Rivian, Polestar, Lucid, and GM still make electric cars, and generally good ones.

A used 2021 model 3 or y from Tesla will probably be th cheapest you can get without getting something like a used bolt, volt, or leaf.
