2·13 days agoFrom the episode King Size Homer if I’m not mistaken. Probably my all time favorite episode.

politics @lemmy.world•Justice Department sues to block California's new House map in clash that could tip control of Congress
7·13 days agoIf a state receives a court order that their maps are illegal, they just have to throw up their hands and pretend there’s no time to change them until the election takes place. Then they can use the illegal maps and face no consequences. This precedent has been set in multiple legislatures controlled by the bastards.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why don't cars have a way to contact nearby cars like fictional spaceships do?
16·26 days agoImagine the giant trucks road raging because you’re in the left lane and only going +20 the speed limit. Or the old creeps hitting on teenagers.
What if we instead imagine the truck drivers politely asking you to move over? What if the ability to communicate freely with other drivers made the experience closer to walking in a crowd. I’m imagining something that allows all vehicles within a certain radius to hear one another so you can communicate with courtesy. I think a lot of road rage stems from our frustrations with our inability to communicate (and be held accountable) by the people around us.

21·1 month agoI would threaten to not buy any more Halo games but I haven’t bought one in like a decade so I recognize there’s not much bite there.

politics @lemmy.world•Republicans grapple with voter frustration over rising health care premiums
53·1 month agoI’d say apathy should be interpreted as a vote for the status quo (incumbent) but it’s flatly wrong to call it a vote at all.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Tell me there are no women in your life without saying there are no women in your life.English
0·1 month agoIt seems the only data provided about the demographics and political leanings of the fandom are anecdotal accounts from social media. Do you think it ever occurred to the author that they might just have an algorithm that recognizes their preference for shitty content?

8·2 months agoAlso, I think health insurance and all insurance is a scam, just be clear!
What even is her position here? She is against single payer and against insurance companies. Does she want us paying for everything out of pocket?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•My first jellyfin setupEnglish
2·2 months agoYou’re correct. The Fire Stick would be a client. I currently use a Pi 4 as my server and it works great, but I use KODI instead of jellyfin. This means that nothing trys to transcode when I use it. However, my brother is able to connect to my server through Tailscale and he does some sort of GPU pass thru with a jellyfin container and as far as I know it works great.

3·2 months agoIf you’re looking for mini PC recommendations, I have been very happy with my Beelink Ser8. It was chosen specifically for handbrake encoding and is an order of magnitude faster than my underpowered decade old desktop.
Edit. I just reread your post saying that you don’t want to buy a mini PC so disregard that advice but if you want to stream to TVs on a budget, I am a big fan of the Fire Stick. If you get them on sale, they’re usually available for half the listed price (about $25 when I got them). You can get them on ebay if you don’t want to support Bozos. Currently they’re very easy to configure and they work great as long as you can get over the clunky menu design.

1·2 months agoYou may want to check out https://www.thewebernets.com/ blog posts. I use some of the recommend setups for my movies and most look great, but I do use subtitles which I think he mostly skips in his setups.

News@lemmy.world•Most US college students oppose letting controversial speakers on campus
18·3 months agoThe report also found students were “reluctant to speak their minds, especially on controversial political issues”, with many admitting that “they self-censor regularly, avoid certain topics entirely, and doubt their administrators would defend free expression if controversy struck”.
I would be relectant to speak my mind in that situation too. Everything is recorded and uploaded now. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

I’d say virtually all Hispanic people have some Native American ancestry. The number of Hispanic people living in the Americas with an exclusively European lineage is probably very small. But, that’s just like my opinion, man.
