What truly identifies someone as republican or democrat? Does it boil down to who you voted for? Or a culmination of of conservative or liberal opinions?
Edit: I consider myself a centrist… ive voted in all the presidential elections, but ive never voted right or left, always 3rd party. I never like the options. I dont make big out of politics, its too annoying, and id like to find a girl that doesnt have extreme political views.
That said, there are pros and cons to dating someone on either side. Democrats girls… oh lord, they definitely can be more annoying about politics than the R girls. Oh they’ve usually slept with a LOT more people than R girls, and they’ve potentially had girlfriends in the past, thats fine though. R girls are much more pretentious. R girls can have more unrealistic views about “what a man should do”. They feel like if you dont follow some arbitrary rules, you are less masculine somehow. There is more byt im done.
No one is a “centrist”, although everyone think they are centrist. It means nothing to be in the center and nothing “truly identifies someone as” centrist.
You can tell who’s the republican tho by just looking at them
I’m going to assume you’re quite young and try to delve into some of what you’re trying to explore here.
I find politics to be very important if not the most important factor in choosing a long term partner.
With the divergence we’ve seen on both ends of the political spectrum, centrist doesn’t mean anything anymore. It only a meaningful application when the Overton window is narrow. It was narrower 20 to 30 years ago. Now it’s so wide that when someone tells me they’re centrist it usually means they’re politically disengaged, indecisive and/or noncommittal which can be red flags when looking for a long term partner.
Voting third party is not a problem if you can back that up with a legitimate worldview beyond being nonconformist for the sake of feeling unique.
I see that you’re noticing trends. That’s perfectly ok, we all do. Just make sure you stay humble enough to know that the number of data points you have will always make your perspective anecdotal. Avoid saying these people are like this, especially when you run the risk of being dismissive or dehumanizing, because the reality is you don’t know all people in that group. When you meet an individual, see them as an individual, as unique, sophisticated and varied as you are.
You’ve attempted to describe women with liberal and conservative worldviews but have managed to do so in a fairly crass and dismissive way. This is actually kind of impressive since usually its one side describing the other in an unflattering manner but because you are “centrist” you’ve managed to berate both.
This is what many describe as the “South Park” effect. Staying in the middle, critiquing both sides to feel superior about yourself while standing for little to nothing on your own. Its actually very detrimental to political discourse since it prioritizes self over looking for ways to uplift society as a collective.
Your conclusions come across as overly superficial. Instead of trying to paint in such broad strokes, try to understand people on a deeper more meaningful level. Be humble, respectful and curious about the world and people.
You’re being criticized heavily but the reality is many of us thought with simple pattern based heurisitics when we were younger. Its the most common way of thinking when we’re teenagers and young adults.
What’s remarkable is many people don’t mature beyond this over the course of an entire lifetime. Don’t be one of those people. Life is better when you go deeper.
Since you’re centrist I don’t know if you agree with me on this but I believe that women, our LGBT brothers and sisters, and people of all racial and national background are people. For that reason I strongly believe that their rights are indeed human rights. In modern political discourse that makes me leftist but its beyond labels for me. For me, its part of what makes me human.
I find politics to be very important if not the most important factor in choosing a long term partner.
Noticing trends, I feel like people who say this have limited experience in close relationships with people of widely disparate views. I personally would hate to date someone who agrees with me on most things. Not only because it would be boring, but because it would be hard to learn and grow from them.
I see what you’re saying but I think when you really get to know a person you’d be hard pressed to find two that overlap so much that theres nothing they can learn from each other. At least that’s what I’ve experienced. Certain beliefs / viewpoints are so fundamental to how we view the world that they are absolute deal breakers / nonnegotiable for me (for example, human rights, as I’ve mentioned above) in the context of a long term relationship. That isn’t a denial of the other person’s ability to grow per se, just that if I’m going to invest so much in another person, they have to be able to see humanity in all and I don’t think its constructive for us to be a relationship if they don’t at least have the potential to get there.
I see what you’re saying but I think when you really get to know a person you’d be hard pressed to find two that overlap so much that theres nothing they can learn from each other.
No I agree completely, its just less interesting, and less opportunity.
In reality though, whether we mostly agree on most values(other than how they treat me and specific people I care about) does not have much of an impact in how I choose who date.
for example, human rights
The thing is, I think you, I, and basically everyone disagrees on what human rights are. It would be hard to date in much of the world if you believed in freedom of speech, or vice versa in other places.
they have to be able to see humanity in all
Again, I think in many places its hard to find people who do.
I don’t think its constructive for us to be a relationship if they don’t at least have the potential to get there.
I don’t see why someone having the same view of morality as me is necessary to have a relationship.
Dang, wow friend, you are on point in several places. First, thank you for responding in such a constructive manner and not devolving into ad hominem attacks. (which I can be guilty of sometimes).
when someone tells me they’re centrist it usually means they’re politically disengaged, indecisive and/or noncommittal which can be red flags when looking for a long term partner.
I think your on point here too. Kinda applies to me.
“You’ve attempted to describe women with liberal and conservative worldviews but have managed to do so in a fairly crass and dismissive way. This is actually kind of impressive since usually its one side describing the other in an unflattering manner but because you are “centrist” you’ve managed to berate both.”
This feels flattering. That was my intention, to denigrate equally. But maybe i shouldn’tdo that, it feels too cynical… seriously, I shouldnt do that, I should lift others up and not pull them down.
I find politics to be very important if not the most important factor in choosing a long term partner.
I dont believe that, but to each their own. I believe that they are important because what they represent, and what that they can tell us about a person. Its the moral implications of the policies that the politics enacted…
I dont know, Im super tired, have a migraine and need to stop this for now…
I feel like I used to be a centrist, and then things continued shifting around me until the concept of the government acting sanely and working for the people it represents makes me an extreme leftist…
I think it’s reasonable to be critical of extremists. Like, I argue against lefty wokescolds/puritans/tankies all the time. But like, if you’re between the DNC and the GOP and you think that’s some kind of “both sides/fair and balanced/enlightened” position… you’re probably politically ignorant… Hell, if you think the DNC is some actual leftist position… you’re probably politically ignorant.
I just watched a Ronald Reagan video last night where he predicted everything that’s happening right now, because he saw it during the Depression. I found myself thinking “holy fuck, Ronald Reagan is making a lot of sense, what a leader”.
Ill try to clarify my opinion. Not much turns me off more than the extreme militant political person. If your an average Joe like me, there is no reason your identity should be extremely political. If you consistently become emotional about political issues, you might need to take a step back and re-examine yourself. Its a sign that you can get led by nose and susceptible to emotional manipulation by a political agenda…
Its actually fairly simple, do you have strong political opinions? And an asshole about it? I love you as a person in general, but also f–k off. I dont want to hear you regurgitate the propaganda that you have been fed, this applies to both sides like calling me a “diet nazi.”
I do think most can agree with me that the extremely political, vocal and opinionated folks are generally insufferable A-holes. Either side.
Ive been called a communist/socialist by the conservatives i know, ive also been called a fascist by democrats/liberals and others. I haven’t picked a side, and im not going to, so im disliked by by both sides.
Everytime someone says “uhm actually, I’m a centrist” it’s code for “actually I’m squarely right wing but plz plz plz don’t hate me for it uwu”.
And he takes issue with being labeled as “diet nazi”. Like, bro, that’s what you are. You’re an enabler and useful idiot for fascists. That’s why people don’t like you.

EDIT: fukcing LOL, he deleted his post so the link above is defunc now. That’s okay, here’s some Charlie apologia quotes from his comment history:
charlie never advocated violence. But the contrary, in fact. To solicit violence from anything he said would only come from your perceptions and bias, not what he “preached”
The divide is so deep here. If you feel some sort of hatred for charlie kirk, please, do let everyone know. We want to know if you support callus, weak, vile way that charlie kirk was murdered.
Or ya know you can also just Read His Modlog for all the bans/removals he’s gotten for: homophobia, transphobia, trolling, hate, bigotry, misinformation…
last quote, from that charlie thread he deleted:
Oh also im not a conservative, but I know thats probably hard to understand for public school kids like yourself
Ive been called a communist/socialist by the conservatives i know, ive also been called a fascist by democrats/liberals and others. I haven’t picked a side, so im disliked by by both sides.
If you run into one asshole, you ran into one asshole, if you run into assholes all day… buddy, you’re probably the asshole.
Well, I hear ya, and I dont deny sometimes its me being the asshole. But I think it mainly how divisive everything is these days. Like you can say 1 opinion and people think they know exactly who you are.
If your an average Joe like me, there is no reason your identity should be extremely political.
I feel like you almost discovered the concept of privilege here.
If you consistently become emotional about political issues, you might need to take a step back and re-examine yourself.
But then kind of whiffed here.
Someone’s identity as a gay person or black person should not be “political” (whatever that means. Care to define it?). But it is.
Like, it was in living memory that black people had to sit in the back of the bus, and couldn’t buy property in certain places. Women couldn’t open checking accounts of their own until like 1974. Trans people are routinely subject to hate and danger.
Why do you think people are “regurgitating propaganda” rather than describing their experiences? Why is your baseline cool and normal and theirs is “led by the nose”?
And it’s extremely lossy to compress all of politics down to “sides”. There are details. People experience and believe things. It’s not just like rooting for a baseball team (though for some people it can be, admittedly).
If your an average Joe like me, there is no reason your identity should be extremely political.
One of the political parties has made people’s existence extremely political. A trans person’s identity is extremely political not because they want it to be, but because other people have decided it is.
When the current political climate makes “I think everyone should have basic human rights” an ‘extremely political statement’ then there is no way to not be political unless you are a fucking monster.
I’m gonna approach this with good faith because I am assuming you are trying to. No on is immune to propoganda, you are not immune to propoganda and neither am I. Pretending political extremes are inherently and equally bad is in of itself is propoganda. Politics is an important aspect of life, it impacts a lot of people in serious ways. Invalidating that because someone is emotional about it is kinda fucked up. Like yeah a queer person is going to be emotional about politics because their identity is under attack due to politics. Many aspects of life are political, things that people are often times passionate about or otherwise deeply impact them.
Secondly leftist, like myself, believe what we believe because the current status quo is unfair and hurting people. We are striving to make the world a more free and fair place. So yeah, when someone says they are a centrist (which effectively means supporting the status quo), then that is to us opposing progress to a more free and fair society. To us it is saying that the people harmed by the status quo are either not real, don’t matter, or that that harm is a good thing.
I aint gonna say every leftist is built the same. There are a lot with very harmful beliefs. But you are lumping everyone together cause you feel their politics are too extreme and erasing all the nuance. And also lumping us in with groups that we hate and have completely different goals, morals, etc. Fascists and communists are not the same just because they are both extreme. Do some communists really blur that line? Yeah, they are called tankies and I fucking hate them.
This is all to say, shitting on people for simply having extreme politics is erasing a lot of nuance and in of itself is propoganda to help support the status quo.
Edit: nvm dude’s a nazi chud pretending to be a centrist. Fucking coward
They try to appeal as though they’re being civil and fair, but it’s just a deception, every time. Right out of the nazi playbook. I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who called themselves a “centrist” who wasn’t actually, a fucking nazi, but too much of a pussy to admit it.
Thank you, I appreciate that thoughtful response. You’re on point in a few places. Like yes, politics are an important part of life and I shouldnt invalidate someone’s emotions about them… you put me in my place there, I concede. And maybe im not even centrist. I might be a libertarian.
Im not even who you assume me to be. But its ok. Im not worried about it
Why tho ? He’s right. (In the US) voting right or left or 3th party doesn’t change anything.
Rep&Dem work for the elites, and third parties never win. It’s all wasted time.
As a PoC in a neighbourhood of upper middle class white people, quite a few who support Trump, they (the ones here specifically) live life with absolute certainty that Trump won’t go after them. They don’t mind that he’s going after others as long as it doesn’t affect them and may even support it if its to their economic benefit.
They may be right about him not going after them directly. Quite a few are xenophobic enough that they’ll eat some economic loss (which they can easily withstand) in order for a narrative of This is our country to be projected, which they feel Trump is doing effectively.
Its the rural white folk (which is the majority that voted for him) that he will hurt the most but because of poor literacy and education they are easily impressionable and will willingly burn themselves at the stake for him, just to live with the idea that maybe one day they can be just like him.
First of all, gross. These being the things you focus on says more about you than anyone else.
Second, the stereotyping by politics is so inaccurate as to be insulting. If you’re ever exposed to the real world, you’ll discover your stereotypes don’t hold.
No. Judging people for their core beliefs, like if it’s okay for Nazi thugs to abduct people off the street with no due process, is not a stereotype.
If you support this Republican party, you don’t believe in the Constitution, rule of law, or America. And frankly we’d all be better off if you got the fuck out.
I wonder if you’ll ever figure out how cringe your comment is. Also, no one cares who men date (including you, but you’ve over shared that anyways).
The comic isn’t about that. Women’s rights and freedoms are far far more likely to be cut, curtailed, attacked, or rolled back by Republicans/conservatives.
You’re so lost bro. You don’t get the basics here.
This is me explaining them to you.
What truly identifies someone as republican or democrat? Does it boil down to who you voted for? Or a culmination of of conservative or liberal opinions?

Exactly. Even Reagan sounds sane compared to Trump.

Quickly looking at your past comments it’s easy to see why nobody likes you.
lol, you’re not kidding.
Shocking no one… guy says he’s a centrist… four days ago he’s crying over and supporting Charlie Fucking Kirk.

Emotions are unfortunately tied to certain political issues, thats the way it is. Some things’ll never change! Ah, but dont you believe them.
Well, they do both. But its easy to recognize the propaganda when its regurgitated because its usually the same words or phrases used.
Does that mean the topics that elicit emotions are invalid? What does it mean?
One of the political parties has made people’s existence extremely political. A trans person’s identity is extremely political not because they want it to be, but because other people have decided it is.

Good write up. Unfortunately, it’s pearls before swine.
Dudes a winger, Charlie Kirk supporting incel type.
And theres the other issue with identifying as centrist. Nazis keep using it as a way to hide the fact they are nazis
yup… they always do.
They try to appeal as though they’re being civil and fair, but it’s just a deception, every time. Right out of the nazi playbook. I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who called themselves a “centrist” who wasn’t actually, a fucking nazi, but too much of a pussy to admit it.
Yeah I’m giving up on giving people the benefit of the doubt when they say they are a centrist

No point in arguing with extremists at either end. None of them have a life.
Gross
Why tho ? He’s right. (In the US) voting right or left or 3th party doesn’t change anything. Rep&Dem work for the elites, and third parties never win. It’s all wasted time.
If you think we would be in a similar position if Harris had won then you just aren’t smart enough to be talking right now
Do you talk about women that way too?
If you are a white middle class male that miiiight be true. But I am not from the US, so I can’t be sure if it is true even for them.
As a PoC in a neighbourhood of upper middle class white people, quite a few who support Trump, they (the ones here specifically) live life with absolute certainty that Trump won’t go after them. What?
The whole edit, all of it is gross, but the second paragraph is borderline concerning.
Wasted votes.
Oh. Whatever…
Okay, I’ll address that last paragraph.
First of all, gross. These being the things you focus on says more about you than anyone else.
Second, the stereotyping by politics is so inaccurate as to be insulting. If you’re ever exposed to the real world, you’ll discover your stereotypes don’t hold.
Isn’t that the whole premise of this post?
No. Judging people for their core beliefs, like if it’s okay for Nazi thugs to abduct people off the street with no due process, is not a stereotype.
If you support this Republican party, you don’t believe in the Constitution, rule of law, or America. And frankly we’d all be better off if you got the fuck out.
Which party does?
I need to take a shower after reading that.
You sound like an incel. I don’t mean it as an insult, just a heads up.
Would you date this guy?
I wouldn’t date anyone who has an issue with women having a sexual history, so that’s an easy “no.”
Only thing worse than a conservative is a centrist, because centrists are just conservatives that are too cowardly to own up to their hateful views.
who do centrists hate?
I wonder if you’ll ever figure out how cringe your comment is. Also, no one cares who men date (including you, but you’ve over shared that anyways).
The comic isn’t about that. Women’s rights and freedoms are far far more likely to be cut, curtailed, attacked, or rolled back by Republicans/conservatives.
You’re so lost bro. You don’t get the basics here.
This is me explaining them to you.
