1·1 year agoOkay, but. Are they Marxist-Leninist? Pro-China? Socialists? Anti-capitalists? Looks like: yes. Was the whole thing founded on the grounds of free, shared things and anti-corporate thinking? Also yes. Do we absolutely know for sure that the ML domain was chosen because of this? No, because the fucking register of the domain himself said it was chosen because it was free.
It was simply just free. People and their “knowledge” about topics they don’t know anything about…

Dessalines is the owner of the domain, one of the owners of the ML instance and one of the full-time devs of the Lemmy code.
I think an overwhelming number of people simply chose that instance becuase it was the instance, made by the devs themselves. At least it was the case for me.
My code also documents itself, of course.

- the installer starts
- I click on next a few times
- it asks the key
- next
- next
- nextnextnextnext
- the desktop shows up about 20-30 mins later
It’s literally a nightmare.

(If you start a site like this, you surely can count on that somebody will be after you. Host it in different country, pay with Bitcoin, hide your registrar data etc so they cannot sue you. If you cannot guarantee it, why start it?)
Except when it’s not. I so much hate this rhetoric. You know what? You can freely think that I am one, and I genuinely think I’m not. If you think that I am one, that’s your problem, not mine. That’s why OP’s question is so hard to answer. Because everybody is just parroting this rhetoric.
