Zohran Mamdani has won the race for New York City mayor, according to Decision Desk HQ, ushering in a new era of progressive politics in the city and reigniting the debate over the Democratic Party’s future.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, is poised to become the first millennial and first Muslim to lead New York City, after a campaign that pulled off one of the most stunning political upsets in recent memory. He defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who mounted a long-shot independent bid after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, and Republican Curtis Sliwa in his bid to succeed Mayor Eric Adams.
Mamdani focused heavily on affordability, pledging to freeze rent, establish city-owned grocery stores and make buses free for riders. He quickly became a progressive icon as well as a polarizing figure within the party over his positions, so much so that it divided prominent New York Democratic leadership over whether to endorse him.
facebook is going wild. they are circulating an image from (what they propose) is ISIS endorsing zohran for winning. the best comment was “this is like 9/11 again!”
The Empire will strike back folks. Brace yourselves and don’t self-congratulate too much, the real fight starts now. Good luck, American friends!
The moment anyone so much as an atom left of center is elected, all the forces and money of the nations ruling class bears down on them to prevent even a baby step of progress.
So happy to see a clean sweep on EVERY major election across the country for dems and freedom. We cannot take the foot of the gas, the white house is currently working HARD to find ways to take away Mamdani’s win and hurt New Yorkers because they voted against the king.
We need to maintain the pressure.
A win for the people! Cuomo’s campaign expenses were $56 million, 2.5 times higher than Mamdani’s. Cuomo was mostly funded by billionaires, while Mamdani had mostly small sum contributions.
Why are capitalists so bad at investments?? Weren’t they supposed to be the smart entrepreneurs?
Why are capitalists so bad at investments?
Because it’s actually worked. The wealthy have become outrageously more wealthy in the last several decades because of their interference in elections.
Mamdani is a setback for their plans, but honestly 56 million dollars is effectively nothing compared to the money the elite, donor-class holds and uses to influence society. The only way we topple their stranglehold is to have more “Mamdani Events” in every major city and state while we still have democracy and can launch grass-roots elections to remove corruption and money from politics.
Historically and even now, it works. The ones who spend the most, gets the air time, and the George Carlin Americans eat it up and form their opinions after “doing their research” which is nothing but watching TV and facebook from other people who are George Carlin Americans.
It’s super effective and that amount of money where looking at is chump change to these guys.
The funniest part is that I never, at least from the clips, got the idea that George Carlin was a conservative but he did always have an air about him that I think made conservatives believe he wasn’t talking about them.
Now, I’m sure this will prompt me learning some things about Carlin but hey, I’m open to that too.
I’d like to point out feckless Democrats that while Citizens United is bad… money ain’t everything.
Don’t worry. There is a small army of well paid McKinsey consultants right now reassuring the DNC that while economic populism won for Mamdani it would never work outside of New York. They will tell the ghouls bought and paid for by big money donors that yesterday wasn’t a complete loss, Liz Cheney could get some sympathy votes on the ticket if the DNC is just brave enough to make her the VP nom and pivot to the center.
Wait till they invent mind control and add shit to the water supply.
Never Forget, Flint, Michigan.
It is crazy what giving people to vote for something, instead just voting against someone can produce some great results. Mamdani had to take on a class on billionaires and the old DNC leadership he who didn’t want to back him. It is funny af to see Chuck the leader of Dems show vote blue no matter who was fake. He most likely voted for Cuomo.
“It’s crazy what giving people something to cote for versus just something to vote against can do.”
I agree with your sentiment it’s just the sentence broke me.
Someone uttered the words, “Bernie is unelectable”, and everyone jumped ship.
Think of a comparison between Trump and Bernie and the take away is that Bernie is the unelectable one…
I’m still surprised he hasn’t been lynched already based on his name alone.
Tbh, that name doesn’t exactly sound that “scary”. Its not really a name that sounds stereotypically “muslim”. If he were arab/from the “middle east”, then someone would’ve used a photo of him next to a bunch of arabic writing and that would actually be a more damaging propaganda. I don’t think Uganda evoke that sort of phobia, I don’t think most people even have an image of Uganda, its just neutral.
The people who take offense from foreign names don’t stop to consider where the name is from, only that it’s not “'murican”
I have a Pinyin Name (romanized from Chinese) and like I always feel so awkward when people ask for my name because I know they can’t literally pronounce it in the original tonal language, its weirder when teachers keep asking me how to say it and idk how to properly answer that since I know its impossible for them (its not done maliciously, I’m sure they’re trying learn, but it just puts me on the spotlight and makes me nervous).
I doubt I could ever run for office under my current name, nobody would be abke to pronounce my name, and I’d get labeled a “communist” immediately since I was born in mainland China.
So I could kinda relate to Mamdani in a way. Its nice to see a foreign-born person being elected.
You could try finding out the international phonetic spelling and offering it to people. Teachers in particular should be fluent in it.
My name is [ˈjustəs] in it, for example.
“Trump signs executive order that Cuomo actually won and that Dick Cheney is still alive.”
Lol
Trump seems pretty checked out lately, as expected for someone at the very end of the effective human lifespan who already has everything and anything he wants.
I would just love to be a fly on the wall to witness Stephen Miller’s implosion right now. He’s the sack of maggots and feces wrapped in human skin who has been effectively running the country for the last year or so because he has no qualms about taking Trump to the hilt and has earned the old man’s trust that way. He has no power on his own because he’s not liked and can’t capture even a shred of political capital like Trump has, on some level he knows when this whole thing folds he will be completely shut out of politics and may even face prosecution.
Seeing something like Mamdani happen, as well as the blue wave that just crashed over major cities and states yesterday, is a reminder that his clock is ticking and running out faster than he would have liked. Expect to see some wild missteps from the administration over the next several months as Miller goes on an absolute bender and tries to accelerate all his half-baked nazi plans.
Aye, that is the one silver lining of this fascist take-over: Miller et al. have attached themselves to a demagogue who has a looming expiration date, so they are speed-running the creation of the fourth reich. Our best hope is that they’re doing it too quickly to really take root. (And that they can’t find another demagogue to step in when the orange one bites it.)
My country’s (very politically aligned) public news station described Mamdani as “communist” and “anti-Semitic”.
I am always a bit disgusted by Italian public service news station, this one was particularly telling at how biased it can be.
TG2, right? The other day they were saying that there was no genocide at all in Gaza, just “extremely targeted attacks against terrorists”
It’s so extremely targeted that it kills kids before they can become terrorist… /s
Pre-targeted strikes
I think you dropped a letter
Pre-K-targeted strikes
🤣🤣
It’s funny until it’s not. They literally called our kids “children of the darkness”, “little snakes”, and “future terrorists” to justify dropping 100 killotons of explosives as of August 2025, the equivalent of 66.67 of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima.
And the world is mostly silent, and Democrats telling us to shut up and vote blue no matter who.
Hopefully it should give you some insight into who that news station is meant to serve.
Here’s a hint: it’s not the public.
Is he not a Communist? :(
I wish!
No, he’s a democratic socialist.
Damn :(
No. Democratic socialism is a philosophy that believes in democracy first, socialism second.
Democratic socialists believe in social programs within capitalism, they do not work against capitalism in any meaningful way.
the Democratic Socialists of America, the organization Zohran is apart of, is a big tent left organization that Includes everyone from reformist socialists to Marxist Leninists, to Anarchists and Maoists.
Not even close.
Lovely news to wake up to, thanks.
Nice job NYC!
Mamdani also faced scrutiny over his past comments criticizing the police and calling for it to be defunded, though he later issued a public apology to the New York Police Department during a Fox News interview.
Wtf
Kinda expected. He was the only good option
This is what happens when you have rank choice voting. A democracy where progressive win.
NYC has rank choice??
Anyone know if Cuomo would have won without ranked choice? That’s possible to tell right, by just counting up first picks?
NYC had ranked choice in the primaries, but honestly I don’t think it mattered this time because as far as I could tell, Mamdani was the only vaguely credible candidate from the onset. The field was otherwise pretty broken by the Eric Adams mess and Cuomo trying to stage a political comeback despite being at his best times merely an ‘acceptable’ politician and then suffering scandal.
Mamdani also won a plurality of the total votes so even by FPTP standards Mamdani won.
I 100% agree though that having a Ranked Choice style ballot opened up the door for someone like Mamdani though and would do the same for other progressives.
I think the argument would be that the voter strategy changes and they vote their preference more confidently instead of going all prisoner’s dilemma and trying to vote the person that other people will vote for that is most acceptable. So a large volume of people vote for their second choice and never express their true preference in a FPTP system.
However, I do think he would have carried a FPTP system as well, the other candidates were all pretty terrible, and everyone 100% knew the Republican candidate was never going to matter so they didn’t even have to sweat the ‘who can pull the center’ thinking.
If it was any other candidates then I feel it probably would have been closer. The establishment was off their rockers thinking they could run Cuomo again, especially up against Mamdani.
I agree with you, the RCV and FPTP can get a bit of prisoner’s dilemma going. I like STAR or Ranked Robin voting more for that reason since you can vote all of your favorite options with equal weight. So you can have 2+ first place votes and so on.
Whatever happens, everything he does, whether objectively good or bad is going to be both, praised and criticized. there will be sensationlist headlines and lies for both sides, and it’ll force us to dig deeper every time to find out the real truth. Conclusions will be made about his decisions before any results are even seen, do dont be quick to judge. I think we will need to really wait before we see how his policies really affect everything… thats all to say, god bless mamdani and his decision making ability, and bless those around him supporting him. Amen
You won’t see “both sides”, the billionaires own 99% of politicians and media in the US, it’s all from their perspective.
If youre not seeing both sides, open your eyes a bit wider. And dont start assuming the party you like is more trustworthy than the other. Im pretty sure its lying politicians all the way up and all around. Its unfortunate human behavior that we like to put people on pedestals when they certainly dont deserve it…
About your comment though, more people need critical thinking when consider the original source of information.
The first thing my conservative acquaintance wrote was “I hope you re ready for another 9-11” because now its coming" They are really scared eh
To be fair, this is a personal 9/11 for every conservative piss baby who lives in an imaginary world where every paranoid delusion they have about Mamdani is real.
Is that a threat?
So in conservative brain damaged logic, Giuliani was a Muslim, Socialist Democrat somehow responsible for 9/11.
You need better acquaintances.
This was my comparable train of thought… Giuliana was elected so 9-11 could happen! He is fully responsible no? /s
Did you ask them why they think that would cause it?
That would be because of photos with the Imam Siraj Wahhaj… Who according to conservatives was organizer of the 1993 wtc bombing… but was not indicted or convicted of anything related to it.
Yet conservatives get mad about Kirk jokes and wonder why they get kicked off platforms.
Or just jail them even when quoting their supreme pedo leader.
(Probably not the best source link but a quick search will surely find more)
Why do you have conservative acquaintances?
You shouldn’t exclude people from your circles for different political views.
How are you going to reach them and get some sense back into their boggled minds if you distance yourself only?
Because thats what adults do, they are capable of communicating and being near people with different values and opinions.
“if there’s a Nazi at the table and 10 other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with 11 Nazis.”
The “acquaintance” needs a punch in the fucking face and a goodbye.
Thank you.
You do realize that having witty quotes doesnt change anything right? It might be rhetorically effective at face value, but there is no value other than hate at display here.
Good, because I fucking hate nazis. Do you?
If hating nazis is wrong, I don’t want to be right
Not every conservative is a MAGA cultist nor a nazi, it’s ok to have friends and acquaintances with different political views and belief systems from yourself. You’re doing the “everyone I disagree with is a nazi” thing.
Not every conservative is a MAGA cultist nor a nazi,
Never said they were.
it’s ok to have friends and acquaintances with different political views and belief systems from yourself
Unless their beliefs say that others are lesser, or wrong, like LGBTQ people shouldn’t exist.
You’re doing the “everyone I disagree with is a nazi” thing.
Really not though, not sure how you think that is the case
Demonizing people “not like us” is exactly how we got Trump. Not every conservative is a racist monster, most of them are just confused, or heavily gaslit from years of Fox News style propaganda. I’ve personally got a few of my conservative friends and family to see the problems with Donnie Cheeto and openly rebuke his decision making. “Punching someone in the face” for making a poor choice isn’t going to do shit for us when shit gets real, changing their minds will. Not saying everyone on that side of the fence is clear, and I sure as hell hope people complicit with these horrific ice raids etc get locked the fuck up for a long time. Same with all of trumps lap dogs.
Nah, at this point there’s no excuses. If you’re uninformed today, it’s malicious. If you actively support a party of traitors and domestic terrorists, you’re super malicious. All nuance has been strangled and trampled down to mush about 9 years ago.
You’re kicking off over an acquaintance?
Billionaire will = thwarted
Billionaire funding = wasted
We have a long slog ahead of us. But today was a good day.
Amen, brother/sister
I don’t actually think he will do that much due to how stacked the powers are against him, but I think he has shown to the powers that be how reviled they are, and how they need to start playing ball with progressives if they want to win votes again
