Hi, foreigner here, can any Americans explain why the f MTG’s opinions seem to get a disproportionate amount of coverage even when they’re fairly bland ones like this? As far as I can tell she’s not a member of the cabinet or in any kind of leadership role within the party, or have I missed something?

Is it really just as simple as the press loves to give disproportionate airtime and column inches to far-right demagogues, even when it’s the Guardian?

She has a record of making statements that bear a profound stupidity that attracts attention. She is the originator of the “jewish space laser” meme. She is also on a weird redemption arc (it wont work) but she seems to be more reasonable and is acting more professionally since Trump took office.

Speaking as one, we Progressives & Leftists need to ditch this purity-level mentality - it’s self-defeating.

Is MTG an absolute shit-goblin? 100%! But can she be useful in restoring ACA funding, and releasing the Epstein files? Also, 100%!

This is in part how the right has managed to shift the Overton window so far towards their side since the 2000’s. It’s about damned time we co-opt such successful tactics in order to bring some sanity back.

Sure. If you’re delusional in thinking that the American government will ever operate again as it once did.

Liberals still trying to reach across the aisle as we stare a dictator and fascism in the face. So ready to work with a racist grifter that will say anything to keep her career alive. But decades of “how will we afford that?” or “you have to be realistic and compromise with the people that want to murder immigrants”

That ship has sailed mate. The legislative body has become exactly at Republicans wanted it to be. Useless. And if you haven’t realized that you are not “the left”. You’re the liberal that can’t come to terms with a reality the left has been warning you about for over 8 years.

I didn’t state anywhere to reach across the aisle, did I - you just made up your own strawman to get angry and argue against.

However, I did say if someone from the other side - even a gremlin like MTG - supports your existing position and they are the one reaching across the aisle, only a petulant, short-sighted fool would leave them hanging.

But you do you, an stay mad I guess.

Those things run on fiscal years, not calendar years.

But if the House resumes, they have to sit the new members, which means there’s enough to force a procedural vote on releasing the Epstein list.

They’d rather prevent that then do the single filibuster proof bill a year they can get past the Senate.

trump will just keep doing shit and fighting in court than try to pass real laws.

The risk for them is all this combined with the DNC finally pulling their heads out of their ass and fighting for down allot spots again.

We’re not just gonna see a blue wave, we’re gonna see an actual.progressive wave of people who want to fight fascism.

I know right… People have been saying this for TEN years. “The conservative party is going to die out as more old people die off” was the big one in the late 2000s. Then the Republican elite slimeballs realized that was probably true so they invested billions into astroturfing new conservative support, along with all the fascist bullshit too of course.

What we’re seeing now is the result of decades of disciplined effort from Republican/billionaire strategists and lobbyists, and it’s paid off a ton. I don’t think it’s going anywhere for the next few years at least.

I dunno about that, they’ve gotten rid of several anti-trans riders in the past couple of bills, including removing them from the BBB. The Dems in the Senate have almost always unanimously voted against anti trans stuff. Occasionally you’ll get a couple of defectors but usually not.

The thing to understand is that Democrats will throw basically any group under the bus if they can claim they are helping the majority… and that said majority don’t care too much.

This country hates the existence of trans people. Or, to be more specific, the majority believe “You live your life just don’t tell me about it” while secretly insisting that the only reason Little Jimmy isn’t going to be a pro football player and have CTE for his entire life is because Sally has the option to transition if she/he chooses to.

I don’t think we’ll have ALL of the anti-trans shit in the budget that eventually passes (if one does…). But you can bet that schumer et al will be glad to sign off on it if “most of the deal is good”. Which… arguably IS the will of The People but The People are fucking monsters.
